Content validity is a key component of a well-developed scale. Several techniques are available for constructing a scale. One method involves utilizing existing literature to develop the scale. This method has a number of benefits, but is not without its challenges.
Definition
A scale is a ratio that represents the size of a model relative to the actual figure or object. Scale is a useful way to represent the dimensions of a real-world item when its dimensions are too large to fit on a blueprint. It is also used for calculating smaller, proportional measurements.
Musical scales are typically divided into a certain number of scale degrees, and each scale degree is separated by a particular interval value. The smallest interval in the western musical scale is a semitone, while many other music traditions use different scale intervals.
The distance between two consecutive scale degrees is called a scale step. The name of a scale is usually given by naming the first and last notes of the scale, followed by the number of scale steps between them. Some scales are heptatonic (seven note), while others are pentatonic or chromatic. Musical scales that include tritones are called tritonic, while those without tritones are called atritonic.
Reliability
A scale is considered reliable if it produces consistent results in different studies and if systematic errors affecting measurements are constant. But reliability estimates are dependent on the population from which they are derived. For example, a survey conducted in an ethnic minority sample might have more variability in responses than a similar survey conducted in a white British sample.
Another source of unreliability is the fact that people tend to have different opinions about the same topic when answering rating scale questions. This is why it is important to find out what the respondents are thinking and to try to eliminate any items that might bias the data.
To do this, go to Analyze -> Scale -> Reliability Analysis and move the reverse-scored items from the “Items” box into the unused items box. Now run the analysis. You should see the reliability estimate (Cronbach’s alpha) in the output. This is the most common measure of internal consistency of a scale.
Scale direction effects
Many survey design factors can affect respondents’ answers, including question wording, scale direction, and number of scale steps. However, the impact of these factors is not always clear. For example, slight changes in the order of rating scale options can have significant effects on the distribution of responses.
Hohne and Krebs tested the potential occurrence of response scale orientation effects by varying the answer scale ordering for agree-disagree questions and item-specific questions using a fully verbalized 5-point, no numeric value response scale. They found that the dimensional structure of the construct was not affected by the order of the end poles, but that the results were influenced by whether the scale started with a positive or negative option.
Keusch and Yan (2019) investigated the effect of scale direction on answer scale orientation using behavioral frequency questions. They compared data collected through face-to-face, phone, and online interviews with a 0-10 rating scale that was presented in ascending or descending order. They found that a greater proportion of positive answers was selected when the scale was presented in an ascending order, and that there was no indication of measurement equality for the question-specific latent factors.
Item generation
Item generation is an important step in a scale development process. It involves creating items that are both relevant and meaningful to the target population. It also involves considering the content validity of the items. There are several methods for assessing the content validity of an item pool, including expert and target-population evaluation. Using expert judges is often the most effective method, as they can provide objective and consistent assessments of the quality of the items.
Automated Item Generation (AIG) uses computer software to create multiple items from a single question model. It is a promising approach for developing medical summative assessment instruments. AIG has been shown to improve the quality and efficiency of the item writing process. Nevertheless, it has not been examined whether AIG results in items with similar psychometric properties as those written manually. In addition, AIG may produce questions that are less related to the target construct. These types of questions are referred to as ‘isomorphic’ or ‘clone’ items.
